A Mochila | Her backpack

Still amazes me but the truth is I did a backpack. She needed a backpack to carry things to school. At the old school things were different and she had a cloth bag, bought in the beginning where she had her things from one day to another. There wasn't this rush to remember nappies and dummies to sleep, and other things.
I went looking on stores but got tired of so many Miffys and Kittys, and Doras and Disney Princesses mass produced and with whom she has so few affinities, for even more she is not a pink girl, at least for now. I think pink is at the end her preferences list, but she uses it with some satisfaction since moderately.
So I thought why not? I searched for a model easy to make and use. And I found this tutorial and model, and, of course i made my changes.
I chose not to sew the Velcro but i regreat it because with use and with the weight of thigs inside the backpack  is a litle bit open, so now requires correction. But it's still super easy to do. A dozen seams and is mounted. The fabrics are her face and bought at a super reasonable price at IKEA.
It was her surprise on Sunday morning and as soon as she saw it she no longer dropped it. Happened to meet his cousin and showed him her brand new backpack and she immediately said to him it was her mother who did it! We were both very proud, and I gave me a big will to keep exploring the world of backpacks! Also because I have a new toy, but it deserves its own post!

Do 1º Dia...

Correu melhor do que eu poderia imaginar. Acho que até eu me portei melhor e me surpreendi a mim mesma.

The first day on the new school went even better than I could imagine. I think even I behaved myself better than i thougth i would and end up surprising myself. There were no tears, not mine nor hers, altougth the night before had some agitation.

Already lying on her bed she called me and told me she did not want to go to the new school, I explained her that she was already too grown up for the other school and now she would have to go to the new school. She didn't settled down and she kept looking to excited for bedtime, so I lay down with her and talked about  the change and the fear of going to the new school. It had some result as she seems to have settled down and slept a restful night. Already in the morning fears returned and she asked me to go to grandma's house, then to go to the old school, and finally not to go into the new. I went back to talk to her about her fears and told her it was normal, I also had been afraid when I was little but then it all go away as you start playing with young boys. I told her that she would have a new teacher who would like her so much as the other and slowly she start telling me that there was no need to fear.
With her backpack on and a big smile on her face she was filled with good mood and we went to the new school. There she  proved to be fascinated with the all excitement of the other kids and soon agreed to go with the auxiliary to her classroom. She never looked back and there was no crying, she was confident that she would like it. When the auxiliary returned she sayed she went beautifully and that she dropped off her hand when he saw the kids and went playing with them.
She ate her meals well but slept very little, which is normal with all the excitement of the day. Back home it was time to try the new pinafore and gym equipment. She loved the play, although her pinafore is enormous and must be replaced by something near her size.
I'm more relaxed because the first day went well, and when I brought her home she was as happier, or even more, than when I left her at school.
Today, there was no hesitation and it was with great pleasure that left home with her confident look and her backpack go to school.
I think I can finally take a deep breath and unwind ...

Preparing Christmas #5

If I had more time...

I would join this Quilt-Along if I had more time. By the look of the first block and the design of the quilt this must be one of the most beautiful quilts I have ever seen. It is inspired in the Tokyo subway map. And it made in white and bright colors, so cheerful. It's just beautiful! And I have no time for more projects ... The picture is from here.

Preparing Christmas #4

Another flavored salt ready for Christmas! This one is flavored with Red Chilly and it's perfect for meat and sea food. I did't make it very Hot has i want it to fit everyones taste.
To make this recipe i used about 70g of red chilly peppers to 1 Kg of salt.
Put the red chillys in the food processor until they are in very small pieces and then add part of the salt until the misture is equal. Add the rest of the salt and mix.
Storage in sterilized jars and label at your taste.

Do ultimo dia

E agora é tudo novo outra vez.
Yesterday we said goodbye to old school and it wasn't easy. At least for me. Mafalda has no sense of time nor the implications of "never again". What somehow comforts me, because I only have to manage my sadness and my lack of skill and the will to say goodbye. It would be much worse if I felt in her any anguish or sadness, or if she felt unsafe with the change that is coming. But it was still hard for me because my baby is growing up and is moving to a new big school, with children of many ages, with much confusion and many new people to meet.
And it's time to let her grow a little more and live new things away from me, with other people who are not part of my life but that will surely be part of hers. It is so very, very hard to let them grow ... And yet so good and so rewarding ... The truth is that humans are animals of habits and I was accustomed to those people, to know exactly what was happening at each time of day, to guess all with whom she was playing. I was accustomed to leave her in her classroom and see her run for one of the teachers and be pampered by all of them, every morning at school. And I was accustomed to see heonversatr tired but happy in the afternoon, and to know the name and face of every kid in her classroom so I can follow her conversations. I was used to know whith what I could count on.

And now everything is new again. New faces and new routines, which I am sure we will make us equally happy, we just need (I need!) To get used to this change.
The truth is that these last three years have been almost constant change. Which is good after an eternity of years with the feeling of being stranded in space and time. But the pace at which things change forces me to constantly adapt myself to new conditions, fortunately that part of the changes result from conscient decisions and that makes things easier but ... I'm pregnant and sappy, and as I wait for another baby to hold in my arms i see my oldest daughter (this sounds great!) growing and learning to fly ... And it's a very good feeling, very good indeed but ... It's also a lot hard...

Preparing Christmas #3

Another great gift idea is to offer preserves. The preserves can be made with fruits or vegetables or with a mix of the two. They are flavored with spices and have the great advantage to last for a long time, of course if they are well prepared.

It's very important to sterilize the jars and lids, and when preserving fruits or vegetables, which were not cooked, we have to sterilize it again after everything ready. It is not as difficult as it sounds and ensures the proper conservation. Fresh fruits and vegetables naturally tend to decompose with time and thats what we want to avoid.
When preserves are made in the heat, like jam, they should be placed in the jars still hot and covered up for the very heat of the jam generate vacuum inside the bottle.
I used jars with about 700mL and to make for 4jars I used: 6 medium lemons and 6 limes, cut into slices. The slices are put in layers and salted, the surface must allow to drain juice. Keep it in the fridge for 24 hours them wash the slices to remove the salt and dry one by one with a cloth to remove excess water. This point is very important because the presence of water in this preserve may compromise its conservation by facilitating the development of microbial decomposers.
After drying, place the slices of lemon and lime on the bottles, and in each bottle add 2-3 cloves of garlic, 1 medium chilli and coriander seeds to taste. Complete the rest of the bottle with vegetable oil and close.
Wash the jars to remove the fat and put the bottles in a water bath. Let the bath boil with jars submerged for 30 minutes.

Mafalda will be changing school soon. This is the first time we're living the "dramatic" change of school situation. It seems to me, that like everything that is related to children this age, this will be much harder to me than to her. If it was for me she would attend this school until she finishes college. But the school is just for kids until 3 years so it's time for my little bird to change lander ... We are getting really grown!

So we could not say goodbye without leaving some love to these special women that have done so much for my daughter.
Clearly, I had to give something original and done by me, with the participation of Mafalda, and of course something that would not involve a large budget.
I spent sometime thinking about a gift that would be pretty but not a useless thing and it would have to have some prospect of lasting. And it was out of the question to continue working with felt, as these two projects that I have done before to offer them were made of felt!
The idea is not 100% original but resulted beautifully with the changes that i made. It's nothing more nothing less than a vase of flowers, and all women like flowers! The basis for making the vase is a reused can large of grains and beans. It's covered with fabric and takes a top and bottom finish with these cotton yarn that i dye on purpose for this project, with colors combining with fabric colors.
I also tried to combine the flower colors with the fabric to make it more enjoyable.
It is a gift very easy to do, and you can do it with children and has a very low cost. Furthermore, it is always good reuse packaging that would otherwise be wasted.

Preparing Christmas #2

Flavored salts are a great idea for a gift. They are easy to make and fit nicely into the category of gourmet products.
My first batch is almost complete and is a marine slat flavored with the peel of citrus fruit. It smells delicious and is delicious in salads and grilled meat and fish. For 2 kg of Marine Salt I used the bark of 6 large oranges, 4 medium lemons and 4 limes. Put in the food processor until you have small pieces and them join a part of the salt. When you have the rigth misture, add the remaining salt. It should dry for a day to get out the moisture from the bark and let the salt dry and loose.
I used these small jars with about 200mL leading to around 180gr of slat.
Jars and lids are sterilized before being used, and labeled.
This is this year design!

Preparing Christmas #1

August is the month of election to begin preparing Christmas. The bottles have arrived and like last year, I already began to prepare some of the delicacies I'll offer to my family and friends this year.
Last year I embraced the idea of "Homemade Gifts" not only because it makes the investment in christmas gifts much lighter, but mainly because i'm offering goods and not useless stuff that will always be (sooner or later) garbage. Moreover it is unique and always tastes great!
There are many gifts ideas, some are simple others more complex, some can be made in advance and using season fruits and others van be made overnight.
Last year I offered various liqueurs and olive oils flavored with herbs. This year is going to be different, and the effort to find things that can be prepared at this distance was greater. Also because I have to leave most of the things ready by November because after that will be hard to manage time for Christmas gifts ... Even more, with a family as big as mine!
