Preparing Christmas #3

Another great gift idea is to offer preserves. The preserves can be made with fruits or vegetables or with a mix of the two. They are flavored with spices and have the great advantage to last for a long time, of course if they are well prepared.

It's very important to sterilize the jars and lids, and when preserving fruits or vegetables, which were not cooked, we have to sterilize it again after everything ready. It is not as difficult as it sounds and ensures the proper conservation. Fresh fruits and vegetables naturally tend to decompose with time and thats what we want to avoid.
When preserves are made in the heat, like jam, they should be placed in the jars still hot and covered up for the very heat of the jam generate vacuum inside the bottle.
I used jars with about 700mL and to make for 4jars I used: 6 medium lemons and 6 limes, cut into slices. The slices are put in layers and salted, the surface must allow to drain juice. Keep it in the fridge for 24 hours them wash the slices to remove the salt and dry one by one with a cloth to remove excess water. This point is very important because the presence of water in this preserve may compromise its conservation by facilitating the development of microbial decomposers.
After drying, place the slices of lemon and lime on the bottles, and in each bottle add 2-3 cloves of garlic, 1 medium chilli and coriander seeds to taste. Complete the rest of the bottle with vegetable oil and close.
Wash the jars to remove the fat and put the bottles in a water bath. Let the bath boil with jars submerged for 30 minutes.

Mafalda will be changing school soon. This is the first time we're living the "dramatic" change of school situation. It seems to me, that like everything that is related to children this age, this will be much harder to me than to her. If it was for me she would attend this school until she finishes college. But the school is just for kids until 3 years so it's time for my little bird to change lander ... We are getting really grown!

So we could not say goodbye without leaving some love to these special women that have done so much for my daughter.
Clearly, I had to give something original and done by me, with the participation of Mafalda, and of course something that would not involve a large budget.
I spent sometime thinking about a gift that would be pretty but not a useless thing and it would have to have some prospect of lasting. And it was out of the question to continue working with felt, as these two projects that I have done before to offer them were made of felt!
The idea is not 100% original but resulted beautifully with the changes that i made. It's nothing more nothing less than a vase of flowers, and all women like flowers! The basis for making the vase is a reused can large of grains and beans. It's covered with fabric and takes a top and bottom finish with these cotton yarn that i dye on purpose for this project, with colors combining with fabric colors.
I also tried to combine the flower colors with the fabric to make it more enjoyable.
It is a gift very easy to do, and you can do it with children and has a very low cost. Furthermore, it is always good reuse packaging that would otherwise be wasted.

Preparing Christmas #2

Flavored salts are a great idea for a gift. They are easy to make and fit nicely into the category of gourmet products.
My first batch is almost complete and is a marine slat flavored with the peel of citrus fruit. It smells delicious and is delicious in salads and grilled meat and fish. For 2 kg of Marine Salt I used the bark of 6 large oranges, 4 medium lemons and 4 limes. Put in the food processor until you have small pieces and them join a part of the salt. When you have the rigth misture, add the remaining salt. It should dry for a day to get out the moisture from the bark and let the salt dry and loose.
I used these small jars with about 200mL leading to around 180gr of slat.
Jars and lids are sterilized before being used, and labeled.
This is this year design!

Preparing Christmas #1

August is the month of election to begin preparing Christmas. The bottles have arrived and like last year, I already began to prepare some of the delicacies I'll offer to my family and friends this year.
Last year I embraced the idea of "Homemade Gifts" not only because it makes the investment in christmas gifts much lighter, but mainly because i'm offering goods and not useless stuff that will always be (sooner or later) garbage. Moreover it is unique and always tastes great!
There are many gifts ideas, some are simple others more complex, some can be made in advance and using season fruits and others van be made overnight.
Last year I offered various liqueurs and olive oils flavored with herbs. This year is going to be different, and the effort to find things that can be prepared at this distance was greater. Also because I have to leave most of the things ready by November because after that will be hard to manage time for Christmas gifts ... Even more, with a family as big as mine!

Crafting

It's another idea brewing in the cauldron of ideas. Only this time it takes an intermediate step to get there... I need to go from a normal cotton yarn ...
... To small balls of cotton yarn with the right colors for this project!
It's been a long time since I dedicated myself to dye stuff, I think the last time was during the pregnancy of Mafalda! There's something that makes me paint the world when I'm pregnant and this time i am loving the result.
The process is simple but gives a bit of work. i used RAPOSA inks, which is a Portuguese brand and it cames in the form of powder to dye. I can not recommend other because this is the one I know and have not lost enough time to study the materials and processes of dyeing.
Must have some old pots or anything that is suitable to serve only for this type of work. As the quantities i was dyeing were small I used used cans of mushrooms. It has to boil a little.
When it gets the right color take of the heat and let it cool, and here begins boring part: wash until the water has no color. For this specific project is not very relevente because these cotton yarn are not to be washed ever again so will certainly not bleach, but if you want to use it in a project that will be washed you better be strict on this point.
Then just let it dry and make small balls of yarn ready to use.
And so you go from a raw cotton yarn to an explosion of color, ready to use in any project! By the way I have a simple bag to make that would look great with these cords to close it... Pity that my vacations are over or i would go straight to the sewing machine!

A Tenda Mágica

A few months, Mafalda’s school issued a challenge to all parents of all children. Each classroom (2 years and 1 year) had a goal and parents who have children in the two classrooms had to meet two objectives. For Mafalda’s classroom the aim was to write a story, with no more no less then two pages, appropriate to their age.

The jury was composed by the director, the teacher's room and the auxiliary.
The prize was this sweet, a little book with draws of all the kids from her classroom.
I participated with the story "The Magical Tent." Anyone who knows me knows I like to write, I write even when I have neither pen nor paper, I write in my head to myself, and when I have time and space i write all those words somewhere.
But this story was different, it was hard to write for children, even over so small. It was hard to find a thread from beginning to end to result in a story with legs and head, but light and fun and not moralistic. It was also difficult to choose words and construct simple sentences that could be easily understood and accepted by children of two years.
Well, it was a contest and i won the prize. But best of all this was the joy and brilliance of Mafalda's eyes when we brought home a gift that all children of her classroom made to her mother. After all is not every day that all the kids in your classroom makes draws to offer to your mother. Only by this smile and this look was worth it.
But was not only the story that came out of the cauldron of ideas. After i have written I started thinking that this story would resulted in a good children's book, and decided to make an offer to the end of the school year to school. Now this book is being processed but I leave you with an idea, is made in wool and felt with applications of several beads.

Will you say i'm crazy?

This is the top of the Summer Days Quilt. Take a good look. It has about 180x200cm, it's close to a King Size Quilt. I've made the sandwich with three layers and have already started machine quilting. I have made about one third of the horizontal part but ...
Parei.
There's something that's just not right. And I think I finally figured it out. I'm not having fun quilting it. It is monstrous to work on the sewing machine and moreover, as is was design to be a quilt to take outside in the garden, i made the back in jeans fabric, to be tougher, so it is very heavy. The batting does not help either, if it was lighter the process would be a lot easier ... So my quilt is standing on a corner and when I look at him I feel sad. I want to finish it but I do not think i'm heading the right way.
So i thought it might be best to hand quilt it, stich by stich... This is part of the post when you say, "Okay, she freaked out!"
Ok, Ok I know the blanket is 2 meters long and 1.8 wide, I also know that this corresponds to 3.6 square meters of cloth to fill with little stichs but ... I can not stand to see it looking so abandoned when is not even forgotten, and I really, really want to finish it ... But I do not think that i can keep machine quilting it... The machine quilting is not turning out that bad... I mean, the result is reasonable but it's not good enough to make me like it and to meke me have the will to continue quilting until it's all quilted.
So I guess I'll try to do the quilting by hand. What do you think?

Last year...

Last year was like this ... A major project that's so bit that still has no end in sight and many others baby gifts for baby!

With my soul already on vacation and with my body on it's way, I'm organizing things to take with me these days.
I have so many things I wich to do, and now with this baby on the way i would like to have hours and hours to do everything I want and live these days preaparing the arrival of this baby that will change our lives.
But time is a scarce resource and therefore we must make choices, and perhaps even the criterion is what is most priority and what is in stand by for more time ...
And here I committed myself to not start more than three new projects this year. I ended up compromising everything has i had a sudden fury of starting new projects. And with this I found my way of managing stress and anxiety, which is only now (i had to hit 30 to get there!) that I realized that whenever something bothers me or annoys me or makes me anxious and I is dwelling inside, the response of my body is to spit all this stress in the form of a new project calved from the cauldron of ideas. And with the detachment of the amniotic sac and the interminable weeks just waiting for the worst to happen, I ended up starting some projects which i had not anticipated and well ... I have others ready to jump from the pot and I have struggled a lot to keep them quiet inside until... Well, untill i have more time and old projects finished. But it's so, so hard ...
So I had to focus on priorities and I eventually decide that the important thing is to rest and sleep a lot, because if this baby is like big sister, there will be no good naps for mom in the next two years.
Then i want to take the full joy of this vacation, it will be the last vacation as the mother of one child. Next year, we will be four. And everything will be different.
It's also a priority to spend some time as a couple, and enjoy when Mafalda is sleeping, because soon we will be three in the bedroom with sleep hours exchanged and with other legitimate priorities but will have little time for ourselves.
And so the big challenge is to manage the time in between all this to be able to produce work and get things done with so little time available.
I want to share with you the projects I have underway, but i've hadded it to my to-do list on my vacation.
I'll just say i have a book in my bag and three ongoing projects and have some doubts about the fourth...
