New project

É um novo quilt, claro! Desta vez para a Mafalda. A verdade é que quando estava grávida à espera de ter a Mafalda a única coisa que eu sabia fazer era ponto cruz e crochet, e malha muito mal. Como estava desempregada e tinha uns longos meses pela frente decidi começar a fazer o enxoval da Mafalda, também o do meu sobrinho que era esperado 2 meses antes da Mafalda. Assim comecei a ver coisas e a pensar que podia aprender a fazê-las, ainda que sozinha. E assim mergulhei noutras artes até então desconhecidas. Os quilts vieram mais tarde, o suficiente para nunca ter tido oportunidade para fazer um quilt para ela. É agora.

Este veio publicado na revista Labores del Hogar 588 e desde que o vi que me apaixonei. É quase todo feito de blocos com aplicações. Os desenhos são de brinquedos tradicionais o que lhe confere um ar muito vintage. Vou alterá-lo um bocadinho para ficar mais apelativo para ela. É suficientemente complexo para exigir um estudo cuidado de cada bloco e é o que tenho feito. Esperam-me resmas e resmas de horas a coser esta preciosidade, pontinho por pontinho, mesmo como eu gosto.

It is a new quilt, of course! This time for Mafalda. The truth is that when I was pregnant expecting to have Mafalda the only thing I could do was cross stitch and crochet, some knitting but very badly. I was unemployed and had long months of waiting ahead so I decided to meke thing for my very first baby. We were also expecting my nephew who was to be born 2 months before Mafalda. So I began to see things and think that I could learn to do them, even be myself. And so I immersed myself in other arts at that time unknown to me. The quilts come later enough to never have had the opportunity to make a quilt for her. Now is the time. This one was publiseh in the journal Labores del Hogar 588 and since I saw it I fell in love. It's almost all made of apliqque blocks. The designs are traditional toys which gives it a very vintage look. I'll change it a bit to be more appealing to her. It is sufficiently complex to need a careful study of each block and that's what I'm doing. I have lots and lots of hours of hand piecinga head!

WIP

Tenho entre mãos mais um quilt. Um quilt que se acaba é na verdade, dois que se começa. E assim terminado o quilt da bebé Teresa chega a hora de por as agulhas neste quilt, começado no Verão de 2009. Era para ser prenda para uma bebé que nasceu nesse ano mas vai acabar por ser prenda para uma menina que nasceu nesse ano. É um quilt que tem crescido de vagar e se não fosse estar a ser cosido à mão, bocadinho por bocadinho, podia até nunca chegar a ver a luz do dia. Vai ficar mais ou menos do tamanho do que fiz para a Teresa, até porque quando o acabar a bebé Carolina já não vai ser assim tão bebé, dentro de um mês já vai fazer dois anos.

I have another quilt in hands. A finished quilt is just the perfect excuse to start two more. As I have finished the baby Teresa quilt it's now time to put the needles in this quilt, started in summer 2009. It was meant to be a birthday present for baby Caroline who was born that hear but it will end up beeing a present for litle miss Caroline! The quilt has been growing slowly and if I wasn't hand piecing it I could never get to see the light of day. Will be more or less the size of the one I made for Teresa, anyway by the time i'll finhish this one baby Carolina will no longer be a baby, within one month will be two years already.

A ultima vez que escrevi sobre este quilt foi aqui. Estava prestes a iniciar o acolchoado e foi o que fiz nos dias que se seguiram a esse post. Depois às 16H00 do dia 15 de Novembro entrei em trabalho de parto e o quilt acabou por demorar mais a ficar pronto.

Ainda assim chegou a tempo de mimar a bebé Teresa no seu 9º mês de vida.   

The last time I wrote about this quilt was here. I was about to start quilting and I thats what i did in following days. And then, at 4:00pm of the 15th of November I went into labor and Teresa was born 4 hours after. And so the quilt turned out to take longer to get done.

But now it's done and still in time to pamper my baby Teresa on her 9th month of life.

 

 Neste quilt experimentei muitas técnicas que nunca tinha feito, especialmente ao nivel da construção dos blocos, mas do que eu gostei mesmo foi de fazer o vies com restos pequenos dos tecidos que usei. Existem vários tutoriais na net e vale bem a pena o trabalho porque o resultado é espectacular. As costas do quilt estão num estampado colorido simples e a linha de acolchoar é branca.

In this quilt I tried many techniques that had never done, especially at the level of building blocks, but what I really liked to do was the binding with small scraps of fabrics. There are several tutorials on the web and is well worth the work because the result is spectacular. The back fabric is a very colorfull printed cotton and i used i white quilting thread.

Will you say i'm crazy?

Este é o top do Quilt Summer Days. Olhem bem para ele. Tem cerca de 180x200cm ou seja é perto de um Quilt King Size. Já fiz a sandwich com as 3 camadas e até já comecei a acolchoar, na máquina de costura, já devo ter feito para aí 1/3 da parte horizontal mas...

Parei. Há qualquer coisa que não está bem. E eu acho que finalmente descobri. É que não estou a gostar de o acolchoar. É monstruoso para trabalhar na máquina e ainda por cima, como está feito para ser uma manta de levar para o jardim e para o campo, tem as costas em ganga para ser mais resistente, logo é pesadissimo. O enchimento também não ajuda, se fosse mais leve o processo era mais simples... Está a um canto e sempre que olho para ele tenho pena. Quero acabá-lo mas não me parece que este seja o caminho certo.

Vai daí e pensei que talvez fosse melhor acolchoá-lo à mão, ponto por ponto... Esta é a parte do post em que vocês dizem: "Pronto, foi desta que se passou!"

Ok, Ok. Eu sei que a manta tem 2 metros de comprimento e 1,8 de largura, também sei que isso corresponde a 3,6 metros quadrados de pano para encher de pontinhos pequeninos mas... Não suporto mais vê-la ali tão abandonada quando nem sequer está esquecida e quero mesmo, mesmo acabá-la... Mas não me parece que o consiga fazer mais na máquina... É que nem do resultado estou a gostar... Quer dizer, está razoável mas não está suficientemente bem para mim para me fazer gostar do resultado ao ponto de me dar aquela vontade de continuar até ver tudo acolchoado.

Por isso acho que vou tentar fazer o acolchoado à mão. O que vos parece?

I've stopped. There's something that's just not right. And I think I finally figured it out. I'm not having fun quilting it. It is monstrous to work on the sewing machine and moreover, as is was design to be a quilt to take outside in the garden, i made the back in jeans fabric, to be tougher, so it is very heavy. The batting does not help either, if it was lighter the process would be a lot easier ... So my quilt is standing on a corner and when I look at him I feel sad. I want to finish it but I do not think i'm heading the right way.

So i thought it might be best to hand quilt it, stich by stich... This is part of the post when you say, "Okay, she freaked out!"

Ok, Ok I know the blanket is 2 meters long and 1.8 wide, I also know that this corresponds to 3.6 square meters of cloth to fill with little stichs but ... I can not stand to see it looking so abandoned when is not even forgotten, and I really, really want to finish it ... But I do not think that i can keep machine quilting it... The machine quilting is not turning out that bad... I mean, the result is reasonable but it's not good enough to make me like it and to meke me have the will to continue quilting until it's all quilted.
So I guess I'll try to do the quilting by hand. What do you think?

Dear Jane #3

Chegaram finalmente os primeiros tecidos para o Dear Jane. Encomendei-os da Norton House e até que chegaram cá bastante depressa. Agora é ultimar os preparativos e começar a coser bocadinhos de tecido!

My new fabrics arrived this week. They are the first fabrics i order for my Dear Jane quilt and they came from Norton House. Now i just have a couple more things to arrange before i can start!

 Só mesmo por graça inscrevi-me neste concurso. O Quilting Gallery está a promever uma série de concursos semanais temáticos, esta semana o tema é quilts para meninas e como os meus quilts têm tido sempre as meninas como alvo resolvi apresentar este a concurso.

Para quem não se lembra este foi o Quilt que fiz para a bebé Carolina e tem uma Hello Kitty e um acolchoado com flores em todo o fundo. Resolvi submeter este e não o que fiz para a bebé Beatriz porque achei este mais diferente já que o outro é todo geométrico.

Os quilts vão estar a votação de sexta a sábado por isso passem por lá e votem no que acharem que merece o vosso voto!

Quilting Gallery is promoting several weekly quilt contests. This week is about quilts for litle girls and i have registered my participation, has i have been making quilts for my baby girls!
I decided to enter the contest with the quilt i made for baby Carolina because i think it's a bit different than the usual quilts i see. This is a quilt with a Hello Kitty apliqque and a flower pattern for the quilting. The apliqque was made by machine and the quilting by hand. Votting will start on friday and will go until saturday, so please, go over there and vote in the quilt you like the most!

Dear Jane #2

Chegaram os primeiros materiais para o Dear Jane. Indispensável o Freezer Paper, difícil de encontrar por estas bandas mas que me parece que vai facilitar e muito o trabalho! As linhas são de ceda, da Gutterman e como podem ver pelas cores, sempre me decidi pelos cinzentos e rosas. Depois mostro-vos porquê! Aproveitei, literalmente, a embalagem, e mandei vir umas agulhas de coser nº12, nº11 e um pacote com agulhas dos tamanhos nº5 a nº10. Já comecei a coser com as numero 12, são muito pequeninas e muito fininhas, ideais para micro trabalhos como vai ser o Dear Jane e como está a ser um que tenho entre mãos e que futuramente faço um update. Ainda aproveitei para comprar uma caneta marcadora, daquelas que saem com a água e que me parece bestial, especialmente para desenhar os padrões do acolchoamento na sanduíche. Fiquei arrependida de não ter comprado linhas 100% algodão para coser o Dear Jane mas é provável que venha a encomendar mais umas linhas de ceda, em tons mais claros e mais escuros e o equivalente em linhas de algodão, já que decidi que vou fazer o Dear Jane todo à mãozinha! Nada de máquina desta vez! E ver se resisto a espreitar a coleção da King Tutt para não comprar já a linha de acolchoar que só vó precisar daqui a pelo menos 5 anos!

The first supplies for my Dear Janearrived this week! It was very difficult to find Frezzer Paper in Europe and i didn't want to ordem from the USA this time, because the package is to big and it could have some costume dutties that i was not in the mood to pay for! I did find it in the UK, in a online store were i bought some treads for my quilts before.

I also order some new needles. I have a variety of John James needles but i didn't have any sharps and specialy not this size. I order neddle size 12, 11 and a pack with size 5 to 10. I try nº12 westerday and i like it a lot. Very thin and very small very easy to sew with.

And i order a blue marker for my quilts, it cames out with water and i think it will be a great help!

This time i order some silk treads from gutterman for the apliqque parts of the Dear Jane quilt. As you can see from the colors i finnaly decided for the White-Grey-Pink combination, i'll show you why in a latter post. I think i'll order some more colors of silk tread along with some cotton tread in the same colors. I'll be making my Dear Jane all by hand! No machine this time! And i'll try to resiste to look at King Tutt quilting tread collection, as i really don't want to buy now the quilting tread i'll just be needing in 5 years or so!

Dear Jane #1

Passado o Carnaval volta a rotina ao normal. Os fatos ficaram prontos a tempo da festa só foi pena o tempo não ter ajudado nada. Ainda assim houve brincadeira até fartar.

Agora o Dear Jane. Este é o Quilt! Aquele que me prendeu a atenção desde o primeiro olhar. É um grande quilt, um quilt para a vida. Não se faz num ano, nem em dois... nem espero acabá-lo tão cedo... Mas quero muito começa-lo e ir-lhe dedicando um pouco do meu tempo a vê-lo crescer e amadurecer, um pouco como o vinho do porto, se me permitem a comparação.

Tenho andado a estudar os blocos e a escolher cores, mas tem sido dificil articular todas as possibilidades... Este quilt tem possibilidades infinitas e até mesmo o conceito com que foi eleborado, de ser feito de restos, sem repetição de padrões, é apaixonante.

Por estar indecisa resolvi vir até aqui partilhar a minha dúvida e pedir a vossa opinião. Vá lá leitoras assiduas, não sejam timidas a deêm lá uma ajudinha para ver se isto arranca!

Pensei, inicialmente, fazer o quilt a três cores. O branco como fundo, e o rosa e o cinzento em variações de tons. Mas estive a pesquisar em várias lojas e não existem muitos tecidos cinzentos pelo que estou a começar a achar que talvez não seja fácil arranjar os tecidos certos para esta conjugação.

Surge então uma alternativa que é a de substituir o fundo por um creme clarinho, só para cortar o brilho do branco, manter o rosa e juntar o castanho mais para os tons do chocolate.

E a terceira opção é a de fazer o quilt com o fundo branco e os blocos com vários padrões mais ou menos aleatórios nas cores, tal como o original.

Estou mesmo indecisa por isso conto com a vossa ajuda. Se fossem vocês como o faziam: em branco, cinzento e rosa, em creme, castanho e rosa, ou com muitas cores?

Já agora e como estou em maré de pedir ajuda estou aberta a trocas de tecidos com quem quiser e tiver para trocar, mandem-me um mail ou deixem um comentário que combinamos os detalhes da coisa.

The Carnival has passed and our costumes were ready in time for the party. Unfortunatly the weather didn't help and it rained all day and the temperatures were to low to get outside. But we had a great time and play a lot.

I made up my mind and i decided to start my own Dear Jane Quilt. I fell in love with it the first time i saw Karens Dear Jane. This is a awsome quilt and i've studying the blocks and choosing the colors i want to use. And here comes the first problem! I can't decide how am i going to do this quilt! I NEED HELP!

My first choice was to make the quilt with a white background and the aplications in the blocks with tones of  pink and grey. But i have been looking for grey fabrics in stores (on-line and others) and there aren't many, so i think it will be hard to do yhe quilt with this color scheeme.

I have another option. Change the background color to a light beige and the grey fabric to a dark chocolate brown tones and keep the pink.

The last option is to do it has it is, with the white background and all fabrics i can get!

I really can't make up my mind so i'm counting on you to help me with this! If this were your doubt what would you choose: to make it in white, grey and pink and keep looking for grey fabrics; to make it in beige, brown and pink, or to make it with as many fabrics and colors as possible?

Já enviei o meu mini quilt para a troca "Fall Quilt Swap" promovida pelo Quilting Gallery.

A minha parceira de troca queria receber algo inspirado no Halloween o que acabou por tornar-se num bom desafio para mim, não só porque não tenho tecidos com esse tema mas também porque não é muito português essa coisa do halloween, não está na nossa cultura!.

 Neste post de à uns meses atrás partilhava a necessidade de alguma liberdade criativa, um pouco afastada dos esteriótipos. Fazer algo meu, diferente, sem base e sem rede. E acho que funcionou.

Demorou muito tempo até achar a forma certa. Fiz mais de 20 desenhos e tentei um pouco de tudo. Acabei por me dar por satisfeita com um desses desenhos mas depois ainda tive dúvidas quando passei para o pano. Já de tecidos na mão acabei por achar que esta era a forma certa. E assim nasceu o meu primeiro quilt 100% meu, do principio ao fim!

Os tecidos são relativamente simples, lisos, com pintas, com estampados de flores e as bolas que vieram dos estados unidos. O binding faz parte de um tecido que a prima trouxe do Senegal para mim! Acho que resultaram muito bem juntos. Foi 100% feito à mão, ponto por ponto aplicado com muito carinho e depois quiltado à volta das aplicações para mais relevo e na barra preta o padrão imita as teias das aranhas, um toque muito meu para quem me conhece!

Este quilt chegará em breve ao seu destino... O CANADA! E em breve terá uma nova dona: a Deedee Einarson! Espero que ela goste desta minha visão do Halloween!

My mini Quilt is travelling! I made this one for the Fall Quilt Swap promoted by the Quilting Gallery.  My swap partener wanted a halloween related quilt and that was really a great challenge, because i don't have any halloween fabrics in my stash and in Portugal we do not cellebrate halloween, it's not part of our culture!

Anyway in this post i wrote about me need to crete something mine, the need to let my criativity flow on it's own way. And this was a great opportunity to do it!

It took me quite some time and i made more than 20 drawings till i get the rigth one. And the when i was sellecting the fabrics i changed my mind and made some more changes in the pattern! But i thing i made it rigth! And now i'm presenting you my first 100% mine quilt!

The fabrics are simple, just a few dots, solid fabrics and small flowers. It's 100% hand pieced and hand quilted! The binding is made with a part of a fabric my cousin brougth me from Senegal. I quilted around the aplique for a bit of texture and the quilt pattern in the border is a spider web, a very personal touch has i have a thing with spiders!

This no longer mine quilt will be arriving soon to... CANADA! And will have a new owner: Deedee Einarson! I hope she likes my Halloween!
